TravelSmith
Based in Novato, California, this mail-order company specializes in clothing, luggage, and accessories for serious travelers. I wrote every TravelSmith catalog between 1994 and 2001. The process included attending meetings with merchants and company principals, developing product names and draft copy, and working through revisions to final copy.

The Indispensable Black Travel Dress
Fashions come and go, but "the little black dress" never fails you. Dress it up with pearls, dress it down with flats: the look is timeless, understated, and always fitting. Out Indispensable Black Travel Dress lets you take that versatile elegance on the road. We've made it of the same fluid Supplex® knit as our travel separates--a superb, slightly stretchy blend that simply won't wrinkle under any circumstances--and given it a classic, easy-to-wear silhouette that looks good on absolutely everyone. No zippers, no buttons, no fuss: just slip it on over your head. The jewel neckline can be accessorized with scarves or a favorite pendant for evenings on the town; the empire waist and slightly flaring, below-the-calf-length skirt give every figure a flattering line. Roll up this dress and tuck it into a corner of your bag and be prepared for any occasion, anywhere on the planet.

“Nancy was there in the very beginning for TravelSmith. She penned the very first words for TravelSmith and then wrote virtually every product name, headline, and description since. She edited more than 50 catalogs and caught innumerable potentially embarrassing typos. Most importantly, she created copy so powerful it continues, unchanged, to drive extraordinary sales five, six, even seven years later. (Some of my personal enduring favorites include: ‘Not-Quite-Tights,’ ‘The Great Escape Shirt,’ ‘Our Classic Travel Blazer Defies Wrinkles and Pickpockets,’ and of course, the phenomenally successful copy for the Indispensable Black Dress.)

“Nancy’s words both created and defined the TravelSmith brand. As much or more than any part of the mix, her copy continues to define who we are and why we are different and better. In short, her words set us apart.”

Chuck Slaughter, former president, TravelSmith
