naming projects

Nancy Friedman has been creating corporate and product names and taglines for nearly twenty years. She brings to each project a blend of linguistic skill, brand knowledge, storytelling proficiency, and clearly focused strategy. Most important of all, she brings a commitment to problem solving.

A typical naming project begins with interviews and exercises designed to elicit the company or product story. Nancy distills this story into a backgrounder, or naming brief, that she and her small team of experienced namers use to create a master name list, usually comprising 100 to 700 names. The most-relevant names are screened online for trademark, domain, and general-use conflicts. The services of a paralegal may also be engaged.

A final list of twelve to fifteen names, each accompanied by a descriptive story, is presented to the client team for consideration. Nancy guides the discussion and helps the team select three to five names for comprehensive legal review. When necessary, she assists in domain-transfer negotiations.
